The great physician and polymath Abu Ali ibn Sina, better known in the West as Avicenna, (c. 980-1037), a native of the village of Afshana, near Bukhara (present-day Uzbekistan), was considered the most important physician since Hippocrates. His most famous works are “The Book of Healing” – a philosophical and scientific encyclopaedia, and his principal medical work  “The Canon of Medicine”. The Latin translation of “The Cannon of Medicine” was a staple text in the Western medical curriculum for several centuries and is seen as one of the most prominent books in the history of medicine. In 1973, “The Canon of Medicine” was reprinted in New York.
